While the UK government’s proposed Crime and Policing Bill currently covers shopworkers, Deliveroo demands equal protection for delivery riders as well.
This campaign is backed by the GMB Union, an organisation that has established a voluntary partnership agreement with Deliveroo. This agreement ensures a direct line to expert consultation on health and safety with major UK unions. Riders’ safety and well-being are the center of this campaign, and Deliveroo is also encouraging other delivery companies to join this initiative to prioritise the protection of every delivery rider.
Another great thing about Deliveroo is that they are offering their delivery riders free accident and injury insurance, a free safety app, and the newly-launched ‘Respect Charter’, where 30 national restaurant and grocery brands pledge to build positive relationships with riders.
The health and well-being of delivery riders are their lifeline for their jobs. When those are compromised, it can also negatively affect how they work. Delivery riders play an important role in the demanding world we live in, where they wait in line and navigate through bustling traffic to bring us our meals, groceries, and more. With constant exposure to different risks, they must be well-protected and properly equipped with safety gear, as safety is not optional; it is a necessity.
